Paved boat ramp or sandy beach (100 yard over sand) on north east side of parking area.

Under The Bridge 09/11/2013.

Got there before sunrise…. Deploy running lights. No problems catching spot in six feet of water.     But well… I’m great at catching small fish.

A couple of other kayakers came out…

I worked a set of pilings… nothing was happening and nothing blooming on the sonar. Snagged my anchor… break off release worked well… re-attached anchor. Nothing was taking the spot.
A power boat moved off a set of pilings I wanted to get to around 9am, I went to them.

After a while I am getting my spots chomped on… so at least I am seeing that the fish are there.
After the first spot came back with only the head… I moved my hooks to behind the dorsal fin..
Still getting chomps but at least I figure it’s a better chance.

Working both sides of the piling… I get a major hook up… peeling off line, tighten the drag, fish runs under the boat.. Then under the pilings… then back under the boat… then back to pilings and the leader line breaks off right at the knot.
It was a 30 lb leader.. I used a figure eight knot to make the loop.
I will obviously being using a different knot… two weeks ago in one of my other posts I had a hook up.    And the line broke (replace that one).

I am such a cheapskate… I will have to tell you the 30lb line for the leader I used is over 10 years old…
Well… I am going to get fresh line for the leaders… and use better knots.

Then I got snagged two times in a row tossing the fish to the pilings… cut those two off.

This isn’t a boo-hoo story… just a noobie at “The Bridge.” I am getting better at working an anchor deployment with all my gear.. Figuring out better ways to get a my rather large bait bucket out of the water so it’s not a sea anchor between attacking different pilings or wrecks.

All my spots were chomped up by noon… but I didn’t give up just yet.. I had half a chomped spot left so I cut him up to strips and caught a nine inch rockfish. Certainly not heroic. But I’m learning. No more bait left.

I had that very strong hook up… had fun with him running under the boat and back under the pilings and back a number of times… nice weather… hints of Fall as the sun moves lower in the sky.
Although not quite yet, an Indian Summer like day.
